Site Ed. Note: The front page reports that Jimmy Hoffa returned to his Teamster Union duties this date after being denounced the previous day by Senator John McClellan, chairman of the Senate Select Committee investigating misconduct of unions and management, as a "disgrace to trade unionism", accusing him of 48 acts of misconduct. The chairman had abruptly dismissed Mr. Hoffa after four days of testimony, which had begun the prior Tuesday. The dismissal came after Mr. Hoffa said that he could not recall whether he joined with New York racketeer Johnny Dio to enhance his own position in the union and to provide Mr. Dio a foothold in the Teamsters. He had stated in response to dozens of questions posed by the Committee, "My best recollection is I can't remember." Senator McClellan served a new subpoena on Mr. Hoffa, indicating that he might be called back before the Committee at some future time. He also read a list of alleged misconduct by Mr. Hoffa regarding the Teamsters, about which he said Mr. Hoffa had equivocated during his testimony. Mr. Hoffa had acknowledged that he had been wrong in associating with New York "bums and criminals", such as Mr. Dio, and that if elected president of the Teamsters, he would take action to clean the union of that element. Mr. Hoffa had flown to his headquarters in Detroit the previous night and joined negotiators in a labor dispute which had tied up Detroit's three major daily newspapers for six days. Several hours later, the strike was reported to have been settled.
